Self-Locking Cattle Headlocks – Custom Neck Spacing for Dairy & Beef Farms

Eliminate feed bunk bullying and simplify herd handling with heavy-duty self-locking cattle headlocks. The mechanism automatically secures cattle when they lower their heads to eat, creating one-cow-one-position feeding that boosts milk yield by 12–15%. During vaccination, AI breeding, pregnancy checks, or hoof trimming, the same headlock holds animals safely, cutting labor by up to 60% and eliminating chasing and roping injuries. Constructed from hot-dip galvanized steel with a 240-hour salt spray rating, these headlocks deliver a 15+ year service life in corrosive barn environments. Every unit is custom-fabricated to your exact bunk length, with adjustable neck spacing from 11.5 cm for calves to 20 cm for adult bulls.

Why Choose These Self-Locking Cattle Headlocks

Short Benefits

  • Automatic self-locking – cattle secure themselves while feeding, no ropes or chasing
  • 12–15% milk production increase by ensuring every cow gets her full TMR ration

What Are Self-Locking Cattle Headlocks?

Self-locking cattle headlocks are a dual-purpose feed barrier and handling system. During feeding, cattle insert their heads through the opening to reach the bunk, and the mechanism locks automatically as they lower their heads — preventing dominant animals from stealing feed. This ensures every animal consumes its intended ration, improving body condition uniformity and milk production. The same system doubles as a handling aid: with the herd locked at the bunk, a single operator can walk the line to perform vaccinations, artificial insemination, pregnancy checks, dehorning, ear tagging, and hoof inspections — all without roping, chasing, or penning individual animals. Constructed from heavy-gauge galvanized steel with precision-welded joints and smooth edges, these headlocks are the foundation of efficient, low-stress herd management on modern dairy and beef operations worldwide.

How It Works

Release: The operator slides the central release rod to free all animals simultaneously, or individual catches can be released one at a time for sorting.

Cattle Approach the Bunk: At feeding time, cattle walk up to the feed barrier and insert their heads through the openings to access the TMR ration in the bunk.

Automatic Locking Mechanism: As each animal lowers its head to eat, its neck presses against the moving bar. The butterfly latch mechanism pivots into the locked position without any human action. The cow is now gently secured.

Controlled Feeding: With every animal locked in its own position, dominant cows cannot push subordinates away. Weak or timid cows eat their full ration, ensuring equal nutrition across the herd.

Handling & Treatment: The operator walks along the alley behind the locked cattle. Vaccinations, AI breeding, pregnancy checks, ear tagging, and hoof trimming are performed efficiently by a single person.

Application Scenarios

  • Dairy Farms: Ensure every lactating cow gets her full TMR ration regardless of herd hierarchy. Perform herd health tasks at the bunk without extra labor.
  • Beef Cattle Operations: Use the curved yoke option for beef breeds. Handle vaccinations, implanting, and sorting efficiently.
  • Veterinary & Breeding Facilities: Safely restrain cattle for AI, ultrasound scanning, blood collection, and minor procedures with the animal standing calmly.
  • Calf & Heifer Barns: Narrower spacing options from 11.5 cm ensure young stock are safely handled without slipping through standard openings.

Common Questions

Neck spacing is the most critical specification. General guidelines: adult Holstein dairy cows 18–19 cm; Jersey cows 16–17 cm; adult beef breeds like Angus or Hereford 19–20 cm; yearlings and heifers 14–16 cm; calves under 8 months 11.5–13.5 cm. If you run mixed breeds, tell us your breed profile and we’ll set the right spacing for each group.

Painted surfaces chip and peel within months in barn environments due to rubbing, manure acids, and pressure washing. Hot-dip galvanizing bonds metallurgically with the steel, creating a thick, abrasion-resistant barrier that remains intact for 15+ years even in corrosive conditions. It eliminates the recurring cost of annual repainting.

Yes. These headlocks are designed for both new construction and retrofit installation. Provide the length and height of your existing feed bunk wall, and we will fabricate a mounting solution that fits securely without major structural changes.

While dehorning is recommended for herd safety, the standard spacing and smooth edges accommodate horned breeds. For wide-horned breeds like Texas Longhorns, we recommend the curved yoke option or wider custom spacing to ensure comfortable entry and exit without horn trapping.

A central release rod runs along the top of the entire headlock row. The operator slides this rod to open all locks simultaneously. Alternatively, individual catches can be released one at a time for sorting specific animals out of the group.

Yes. We offer curved yoke headlocks designed specifically for circular feed pads, round barns, or curved feed bunk layouts. Provide your radius or layout drawing, and we will fabricate accordingly.
