A 250W bulb hung 90 cm above the floor may give the same floor temperature as a 150W bulb hung 45 cm above the floor. The 250W bulb spreads heat over a wider area. The 150W bulb concentrates it in a smaller circle. Neither is automatically better. It depends on how much floor space the animals need to warm up in.
This is why two farms with the same wattage can get different results. One hangs the lamp too high, and the animals chill. The other hangs it too low, and the animals overheat. The bulb is not the problem. The heat lamp height is.
The correct heat lamp height is not a fixed number you can memorize once. It changes with:
- Animal age. Newborn animals need more heat than animals that are a few weeks old.
- Animal type. Piglets and chicks need warmer floor temperatures than lambs and calves.

These are starting points for the first week. Adjust within the first few hours based on how the animals behave.

For piglets, start around 60–75 cm above the creep area floor. Piglets need a warm floor but also need to move away from the lamp when they get too warm. If the lamp hangs too low, the warm zone shrinks and piglets crowd under it. If it hangs too high, the floor stays cool and piglets huddle.
For lambs, 50–65 cm is a reasonable starting point in a sheltered lambing pen. Lambs need less floor heat than piglets, so a slightly higher hang is usually fine.
For calves, 60–90 cm works in most calf hutches and sheds. Calves need less heat than piglets or chicks, and overheating is a real risk in small hutches. Start higher and lower only if the calf shows signs of chilling.

Reading Animal Behavior to Set Height
The most reliable way to set heat lamp height is to watch the animals. They will tell you whether the height is right.
Signs the lamp is hanging too high:
- Animals pile directly under the lamp and stay there
- Animals shiver or huddle in a tight group
- Chicks chirp loudly and continuously
- Piglets lie on top of each other away from the lamp
- Animals are reluctant to leave the warm zone to eat or drink
Signs the lamp is hanging too low:
- Animals spread far from the lamp and lie on their sides

How to Measure Heat Lamp Height Correctly
Heat lamp height is measured from the bottom of the bulb to the floor or bedding surface, not from the top of the lamp shade or the hanging ring.
Measure at the center of the heated area, directly under the lamp. If the lamp hangs at an angle, measure from the lowest point of the bulb to the floor.
A few practical points:
- Use a tape measure or a marked chain. Guessing leads to inconsistency when you raise or lower the lamp later.
- Measure at animal level. If bedding is deep, measure from the top of the bedding, not from the concrete floor underneath.
- Check after moving the lamp. A change of 10 cm can shift floor temperature noticeably, especially with a 250W bulb.
- Recheck after animals grow. As animals get taller, the distance between the bulb and their backs changes even if the lamp stays in the same position.
If you want to confirm the height is right, place a thermometer at animal level, directly under the lamp. Wait a few minutes for the reading to stabilize. Then check the temperature at the edge of the heated area. Animals need both a warm zone and a cooler zone to move to.
What Changes Heat Lamp Height Over Time
Heat lamp height is not set once. It changes as animals grow and conditions change.
As animals grow:
Animals need less heat each week. Raise the lamp slightly each week, or switch to a lower wattage. A chick that needed the lamp at 45 cm in week 1 may be fine at 60 cm by week 3. A piglet that needed 60 cm in the first days may be fine at 75 cm by week 2.
As weather changes:
In cold snaps, lower the lamp slightly. In mild weather, raise it. A lamp that works in October may be too warm in April, even with the same animals and the same pen.
As bedding changes:
Fresh deep bedding insulates the floor. The same lamp height may give a warmer floor on deep bedding than on bare concrete. If you add or remove bedding, recheck animal behavior.
As the barn ventilation changes:
Opening vents or doors changes airflow across the pen. Drafts pull heat away from the animals. If you increase ventilation, you may need to lower the lamp or add a draft barrier.
As the bulb ages:
An old bulb may produce slightly less heat than a new one. If animals that were comfortable start huddling, check the bulb surface and consider replacing the bulb before changing the height.
Common Heat Lamp Height Mistakes
- Measuring from the wrong point. Measuring from the lamp shade instead of the bulb gives a false reading. Measure from the bottom of the bulb to the floor.
- Setting height once and never adjusting. Animals grow, weather changes, and bedding changes. Heat lamp height needs to be rechecked regularly.
- Hanging the lamp too low to “make sure they’re warm.” Overheating is as dangerous as chilling. Piglets and chicks can dehydrate and die under a lamp that hangs too low.
- Hanging the lamp too high to “be safe.” A lamp that hangs too high leaves animals chilled and can increase mortality, especially in the first week.
- Ignoring animal behavior. The animals are the best thermometer. If they are piled or spread against the walls, the height is wrong regardless of what the thermometer says.
- Using the same height for different animals. A height that works for calves may be too high for chicks.
- Not securing the lamp properly. A lamp that swings or falls changes height unpredictably and is a fire risk.
- Forgetting about drafts. A lamp at the correct height in still air may be too high in a drafty pen. Block the draft before lowering the lamp further.
When Height Alone Cannot Fix the Problem
Some situations cannot be solved by adjusting heat lamp height.
Very cold barns: In deep winter, even a lamp hung low may not hold floor temperature. Insulate the pen, block drafts, or use a heat mat alongside the lamp.
Very large pens: A single lamp covers a limited area. If the pen is wide, animals at the edges will stay cold no matter how low the lamp hangs. Use two lamps instead of one, or reduce the heated area with a barrier.
Drafty pens: Cold air moving across the creep area pulls heat away from the animals. Lowering the lamp helps a little, but the real fix is a draft barrier or a change in ventilation.
Tall barns with fixed hanging points: If the lamp must hang from a high ceiling, the heat at animal level drops. Use an adjustable chain so the lamp can hang lower, or use a lamp with a longer cord.
Animals that need precise temperature control: A manual heat lamp has no thermostat. Height adjustment is the only control. For high-value breeding or weak newborns, a thermostat-controlled heat mat or brooder gives more consistent results.
Very young or weak animals: Some piglets, chicks, and lambs need more heat than a standard lamp can provide at a safe height. In these cases, a heat mat or a heated creep area may be needed alongside the lamp.
