If you are setting up a brooder or creep area, the first question is usually what wattage to buy. The short answer: 150W suits small, well-insulated spaces. 200W covers most general farm pens and chicken coops. 250W is for large, open, or cold barns where a smaller bulb cannot hold the target temperature at animal level. But heat lamp wattage alone does not decide how warm the animal feels. Hanging height, pen size, insulation, and airflow change the result just as much.

Wattage Is Not a Temperature Setting
Wattage is the lamp’s power draw, not a thermostat. A 250W bulb produces more heat than a 150W bulb, but how much of that heat reaches the animal depends on the distance between the bulb and the floor.
The reflector shade matters too. A good shade pushes heat downward in a cone shape. The area directly under the lamp gets the most heat. The edges of the cone get less. As you raise the lamp, the cone spreads wider but the heat at floor level drops. As you lower the lamp, the cone gets smaller and hotter.
So wattage sets the ceiling of how much heat is available. Hanging height decides how much of it reaches the animal. Two farms can run the same 250W bulb and get very different results at piglet level.

A 150W heat lamp is the right choice when the heated area is small, the building holds heat well, and the outside temperature is not extreme.
It works well for a single litter of piglets in a covered creep area, 10–25 chicks in a small brooder box, one or two lambs in a sheltered lambing pen, a single calf in a well-insulated calf hutch, and mild weather brooding in spring or autumn.
It is not enough for large open barns with no insulation, cold winter nights below 5°C (40°F), multiple litters in one pen, or brooders larger than about 1 m².
A 150W lamp can work in cold weather, but you will need to hang it lower, which shrinks the heated area. If the pen is large, the animals at the edge will stay cold.
What 200W Is Actually For
A 200W heat lamp is the middle option. It covers more floor area than 150W without the higher heat concentration of 250W. For many farms, this is the default choice for pig pens, chicken coops, and lambing sheds.
It handles a standard farrowing pen with one litter, a chicken coop brooding 25–50 chicks, a lambing pen with two or three lambs, a calf shed with one or two calves, and year-round use in mild to moderate climates.

It suits large farrowing houses with multiple litters, open-sided cattle sheds in winter, big brooder rooms with 50+ chicks, cold-climate farms where barn temperature drops below freezing, and tall barns where the lamp must hang high above the animals.
It is not enough for extremely large spaces where even 250W cannot hold heat, or very tall ceilings without a way to lower the lamp.
A 250W lamp hung too low will overheat a small pen quickly. Piglets can dehydrate. Chicks can pant and die. Lambs can become weak. The higher the wattage, the more important it is to hang the lamp high and check animal behavior.

A well-insulated farrowing house with controlled ventilation holds heat. A 200W lamp may be enough even in winter.
An open-sided calf shed with metal roofing loses heat fast. The same 200W lamp may not hold temperature at floor level. You may need 250W, or you may need to block drafts and reduce the heated area before increasing wattage.
Drafts are the most common reason a lamp underperforms. Cold air moving across the creep area pulls heat away from the animals. In that case, the fix is often a draft barrier or bedding change, not a higher-wattage bulb.

Some situations cannot be solved by choosing one wattage.
A very large pen cannot be covered by one lamp. Use two lamps instead of one higher-wattage lamp. NC State University research found that piglets with two heat lamps spent more time in the heated area than piglets with one lamp.
In deep winter, even 250W may not hold the target temperature. Insulate the pen, block drafts, or use a heat mat alongside the lamp.
If multiple litters share one pen, use separate lamps for each litter so each group can choose its own comfort zone.
In tall barns, if the lamp must hang high, the heat at animal level drops. Use a lower-wattage bulb hung lower, or use a lamp with an adjustable chain.
A manual heat lamp has no thermostat. For high-value breeding, a thermostat-controlled heat mat or brooder gives more consistent results.
