Mixed Horse & Cattle Ranch in Argentina

Background
A large mixed ranch in the Pampas region of Argentina, managing 1,500 Angus cattle alongside a breeding program for Criollo horses. The ranch operates across thousands of hectares with limited mobile signal and relies on gauchos on horseback for much of the daily management. Finding animals in remote pastures was a constant challenge.

The Challenge
The ranch needed a reliable way to locate cattle and horses across vast, rolling terrain. During the breeding season, confirming pregnancy early in both cattle and horses was critical to manage the calving and foaling schedule effectively. Some winter paddocks lacked reliable water access, forcing animals to travel long distances to natural water sources, burning energy and reducing condition.

Our Solution
We deployed GPS ear tags across the cattle herd and the horse breeding stock, with gateways strategically placed on high points to maximize coverage. A portable veterinary ultrasound scanner was provided for early pregnancy checks — at 28 days for cattle and 14–18 days for horses. Custom heated water troughs were placed in strategic winter paddocks to reduce travel distance to water. We also quoted on heavy-duty portable corral panels for their seasonal mustering camps (not yet ordered).

The Result

  • The ranch manager could check herd location from a tablet without dispatching riders, saving hours daily.

  • Early pregnancy detection allowed tighter calving and foaling windows, improving weaning weights.

  • Animals in winter paddocks drank more consistently and lost less body condition.

  • The combination of monitoring and water access reduced stress on both livestock and staff during peak seasons.
