Small-Scale Organic Beef Farm in Ireland

Background
A small organic beef finishing farm in County Cork, Ireland, raising 80 Angus and Hereford-cross steers annually on a pasture-based system with winter housing. The farm sells directly to local butchers and restaurants, so meat quality and consistency are paramount. The owner operates mostly alone with occasional family help.

The Challenge
Working alone meant that any task requiring restraint — vaccinations, weight checks, health inspections — was a major challenge. The old barn had a basic fence-line feed barrier with no locking capability, so the owner had to corner animals individually, causing stress and wasting time. Winter water freezing in the barn was also a daily issue. The owner wanted to upgrade the barn infrastructure to be workable as a one-person operation.

Our Solution
We supplied custom self-locking cattle headlocks fitted to the barn’s feed bunk, allowing the owner to lock animals in place for treatment while they continued feeding. This turned feeding time into handling time without adding extra labor. A custom-length heated water trough was installed in the main pen, connected to the farm’s water supply with an automatic float valve. We also quoted on a manual squeeze chute and calf feeding equipment for future purchase as the herd expands.

The Result

  • The owner can now handle the entire herd for vaccinations or weighing alone, without stress or help.

  • Winter water access is fully automatic — no ice-breaking, no dragging hoses.

  • Cattle are calmer during handling, which the owner believes improves meat quality from lower stress.

  • The headlock system paid for itself in saved hours within the first year.
